What is botox in aesthetic medicine?
Botox is the common name for botulinum toxin. It is a product administered in the form of injections to meet a variety of needs, whether purely aesthetic or medical.
As part of aesthetic medicine, your surgeon may suggest botox injections to control repeated contractions of the subcutaneous muscles responsible for expression lines, correct a minor physical defect of the nose or chin, or treat excessive sweating in the armpits.
Botox does not, strictly speaking, fill wrinkles and folds. But it does relax the muscles that cause these unsightly wrinkles.
It is usually used on the upper part of the face, but can also be used to treat the lower third of the face in certain cases.
The aesthetic effects obtained are not definitive. As botox is an absorbable product, it is gradually eliminated from the body over a period of a few months. The duration of the result obtained after injections can vary according to several parameters, such as the quality of the skin, the area treated, the anomaly to be corrected, and the type of product used.
Which areas can be treated with botox?
Botox can be used to treat a wide range of requests, such as :
- Erase expression lines, especially in the upper part of the face (frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet…).
- Lifting a moderately sagging eyebrow
- Correct bitterness folds
- Removing a drooping nose tip
- Reduce the width of overly square jaws (in the presence of overly powerful masseter muscles)
- Reduce excessive axillary sweating
- Treating bruxism (teeth grinding), etc.
At what age can botox injections begin?
Botox injections do not necessarily have a minimum age, as this varies greatly depending on the initial indication.
Around the age of thirty, some patients may benefit from botox injections to correct an aesthetic defect (such as a drooping nose tip). More frequently, however, patients aged around 30 undergo preventive botox injections to slow down the appearance of the first visible signs of ageing, particularly in those who still show very few signs of skin ageing (fine lines or wrinkles, etc.). In this context, botox will prevent the appearance of frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet. Botox offers excellent efficacy and very natural aesthetic results when injected by an expert surgeon, with no frozen appearance to the face.
However, botulinum toxin injections are not recommended for people over 65, as their effectiveness is limited. After a certain age, the signs of time and wrinkles are firmly anchored in the skin, which lacks elasticity. Botox cannot optimally correct these skin breaks.
Whatever your reason for booking an appointment for botox injections, the first consultation with your surgeon is essential. Through an interview and a clinical examination of your face, you’ll gain a clear understanding of your expectations in terms of the aesthetic result you want to achieve, and we’ll be able to offer you a tailor-made solution. Your face will be analyzed at rest and during movement. Your surgeon will ask you to make forced expressions, such as a smile, a frown, etc. This will also enable him/her to make sure that your facial expression is correct. This will also enable him/her to check for any associated anomalies or asymmetries (in muscles, wrinkles, etc.).
