Blepharoplasty and the sun: everything you need to know

Why are my eyelids marked by the signs of time?

The eyelids are an area of the face where the skin is extremely thin. As a result, this is where the first signs of skin aging appear. Over time, the skin becomes dehydrated and loses volume. As a result, the fat between the lower eyelids and the eye socket gradually disappears, leading to the appearance of hollows under the eyes. In addition to hollow circles, bags of fat may appear, creating a shadowy area that ages the eyes.

Similarly, the upper eyelids are affected by sagging skin: excess skin appears at the corners of the eyes. This phenomenon is linked to the loss of fatty volume, as well as the deepening of expression lines such as the forehead, crow’s feet and frown lines. A fall in the tail of the eyebrows can also be observed.

What is blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate the eyes by removing excess skin and restoring skin volume. Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures, as it ensures permanent results. Different blepharoplasty techniques are applied, depending on the indications.

Addition blepharoplasty is one of the most commonly performed procedures. It involves a combination of autologous fat transfer (extracted from the patient) to fill hollows, and resection procedures. This process enables the eyes to be sculpted with precision, guaranteeing a natural result. Similarly, micro-lipofilling restores eyelid volume through fat grafting. Nano-lipofilling, on the other hand, injects stem cells extracted from fat to stimulate eyelid regeneration and make dark circles disappear. Pinch blepharoplasty restores eyelid tension without removing muscles or skin. Last but not least, under-eye bags are removed with a laser scalpel to minimize bleeding.

The after-effects of the operation vary according to the technique used. In all cases, blepharoplasty is very painless, as it is performed under local (and sometimes general) anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The skin may, however, be slightly sensitive if fat has been removed.

Can I go out in the sun after blepharoplasty?

With the exception of lipofilling, blepharoplasty leaves scars on the skin. Although very slight and inconspicuous, these scars require time to completely close. It is important to avoid any aggression or congestion of the skin, to encourage regeneration. Exposure to the sun and UV rays is therefore contraindicated for one month.

What’s more, surgery induces the appearance of edema and ecchymosis. It is therefore advisable to wear sunglasses, apply sunscreen and wear a hat, to limit inflammation and prevent complications such as skin spots. While these recommendations apply to all surgeries, they are all the more important for treatment of the eyelids, which are very fragile and highly exposed to light. You can return to your normal activities 4 to 5 days after the operation.
