Blue circles: what to do?

What are blue circles?

Blue circles should not be confused with other types of dark circles, such as hollow circles and red circles. The latter are linked to a natural overproduction of melanin, while hollow circles are the consequence of melting fat.

Blue circles, on the other hand, are a coloration of the lower eyelids. The skin of the eyelids is extremely thin, so it is also transparent. Any dehydration of the skin accentuates this phenomenon, to the point where the blood vessels of the orbicularis muscle become visible. Dark circles then take on a darker, usually blue, hue.

What causes dark circles to appear?

A number of factors are responsible for the appearance of dark circles. The first is skin aging. As we age, fat melts away and volume diminishes. The skin becomes thinner, and it’s then that the appearance of blue circles is observed. A genetic factor must also be taken into account, as it is possible to have blue circles even at a young age.

The phenomenon can also be exacerbated by poor lifestyle habits. A sedentary lifestyle, alcohol and cigarette consumption, and lack of sleep can all impair skin vascularization. Poor circulation can worsen the appearance of dark circles.

Lipofilling to hide the blue color of dark circles

It has long been difficult to treat blue circles with aesthetic medicine. Today, however, there is a medical technique to get rid of the problem. Lipofilling is an effective, minimally invasive solution for treating dark circles.

This is an autologous fat transfer (from the patient himself). The fat is first extracted using a cannula, before being defibrosed and cleaned. Once it has been rendered fluid by a meticulous filtering process, the fat is reinjected into the lower eyelids to fill them and restore volume.

A specific variety of lipofilling is used as part of a treatment for blue circles. This technique is called nano-lipofilling, a cutting-edge technology derived from regenerative medicine. Profoundly innovative, this type of medicine involves inducing cellular self-repair. It is the subject of ongoing research, notably in the treatment of osteoarthritis and alopecia.

Nano-lipofilling is based on the same principle as lipofilling, except that it has no volumizing effect. The procedure consists in extracting the layer cells and growth factors naturally present within adipose tissue.

After being separated from the adipocytes (fat cells), the stem cells are injected into the eyelids to stimulate the skin. The skin regenerates itself, thanks to the phenomenon of neo-collagenesis, the new production of collagen. The result is a marked improvement in the dermis. Blood vessels gradually become less visible – as the skin thickens and blood circulation improves – and blue circles disappear.

Nano-lipofilling offers many advantages. It is minimally invasive: as the fat is extracted from the patient, there is no risk of rejection or allergies. Side effects are extremely rare. The effectiveness of the treatment is striking, as it is the only truly effective treatment for blue circles. Dr. Hayot’s expertise in eye surgery guarantees optimal results.
