Blepharoplasty to rejuvenate your eyes with cosmetic surgery
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery technique that consists in rejuvenating the skin of the eyelids by restoring the fat that has disappeared as a result of skin aging, while resecting excess skin. There are different types of blepharoplasty, depending on needs and indications:
- Lipofilling: this technique involves the transfer of autologous fat (from the patient). This fat is extracted from the abdomen or inner knees, then cleaned and injected into the lower eyelids, between the skin and the orbital bone. Lipofilling guarantees definitive results.
- Pinch blepharoplasty: only performed on the lower eyelids, this technique involves pinching the skin along the length of the eyelid and removing excess skin. This procedure rejuvenates the eyes without detaching the subcutaneous tissues. It also spares the nerves and orbicularis muscle, preventing the risk of complications.
- Addition blepharoplasty: the most classic technique, this consists of fat injection combined with resection of excess skin. The skin of the eyelids is thus tightened, preventing any possible orbitalization of the eyes.
- Nano-filling: similar to lipofilling, this treatment involves removing the patient’s own fat and extracting stem cells. These cells are then injected into the skin, where growth factors stimulate collagen production and vascularization of the grafted cells. Eyelid skin can then regenerate itself.
- Transconjunctival pocket removal: this technique is widely used to correct drooping eyelids. It involves the removal of pockets of fat located under the eyelids. Incisions are made using an electric scalpel, flush with the eyelashes.
What happens after eyelid surgery?
The postoperative period varies according to the technique used. In all cases, blepharoplasty is painless, as it is performed under local (and sometimes general) anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The skin may nevertheless be slightly sensitive if fat has been removed.
With the exception of micro and nano filling, blepharoplasty involves making an incision. Consequently, it leaves behind a scar on the eyelids. This scar is always discreet, as I use an electric scalpel, which minimizes bleeding. Likewise, most scars are located inside the eyelid and are not visible.
Finally, the post-operative period leaves bruising and swelling, which fade over several days or, in rare cases, even several weeks:
After 1 day:
The first day is usually marked by discomfort and swollen eyelids. The eyes may be slightly irritated, with a sensation of dryness or stinging, but symptoms vary from one individual to another. Bruising may also be visible.
After 5 days :
After about a week, bruising and swelling begin to diminish significantly. Most patients are able to resume light activities, although sunglasses are recommended to protect the operated area. Sutures, if used, are usually removed.
After one month :
After one month, signs of the procedure are usually barely noticeable. Most of the swelling and bruising has disappeared, revealing a more rested and rejuvenated appearance. Scars, while still present, are beginning to fade.
After one year :
One year after the operation, the patient can expect to see the final results. Scars should be almost invisible, and eyelids should look younger and more alert. Blepharoplasty has overall durability, and results can last for several years, with a natural appearance of the eyelids.
When can I resume my activities after blepharoplasty?
After blepharoplasty, it’s crucial to adopt a proper post-operative care routine to optimize healing and aesthetic results. Initially, this means resting and keeping the head elevated to minimize swelling. Intense activity that could increase blood pressure in the head should also be avoided. Cold compresses can be applied to the eyes to reduce swelling and discomfort. It is important to gently clean the operated area with the solutions recommended by Dr. Hayot in Paris to prevent infection. Avoid exposure to the sun, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
Blepharoplasty does not require lengthy social exclusion. However, sports activities are contraindicated for two to three weeks, to avoid any undesirable complications and to allow the skin to heal fully.
It is perfectly possible to resume social activities about ten days after the procedure. In the case of laser removal of bags under the eyes, activities can be resumed 4 to 5 days after the procedure. Make-up can be applied after at least a week, once the sutures have been removed.
