Vitamin therapy and eye surgery: optimising your recovery

Why vitamin therapy in eye surgery?

Conversely, targeted supplementation before and after a blepharoplasty may contribute to:

  • Significantly reducing post-operative oedema
  • Reducing bruising and how long it lasts
  • Speeding up scar maturation
  • Strengthening immune defences during the peri-operative period
  • Improving the final quality of the skin

The essential vitamins in oculoplastic surgery

Vitamin C is an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis. Without it, fibroblasts cannot produce the collagen needed for tissue repair. Given intravenously, it reaches plasma concentrations 10 to 70 times higher than by the oral route, providing immediate support for healing after the procedure.

Vitamin D, immunity and inflammation

A vitamin D deficiency, common in France, is associated with an exaggerated inflammatory response and slower healing. Supplementation helps to modulate post-surgical inflammation and to strengthen immune defences.

Vitamin A · Epithelial regeneration

Retinol stimulates keratinocyte proliferation and cell differentiation. It plays a direct part in rebuilding the skin epithelium, which is particularly relevant for the thin skin of the eyelids.

Zinc · Enzymatic repair

Zinc takes part in more than 300 enzyme reactions involved in healing. It supports cell division, protein synthesis and the working of the immune system. An optimal intake reduces the risk of post-operative infection.

Magnesium, stress relief and recovery

Magnesium contributes to muscle relaxation, to reducing stress before and after surgery, and to sleep quality, three decisive factors for a calm recovery after eye surgery.

Our integrated three-phase protocol

Phase 1 · Assessment and preparation (D-15 to D-7)

A full blood test identifies any deficiencies you may have (vitamin D, iron, zinc, B12). Depending on the results, a first intravenous vitamin infusion may be given at the Centre Trémoille, ideally 7 to 10 days before the procedure, to optimise your reserves.

Phase 2 · Peri-operative period (D-3 to D+7)

Targeted oral supplementation completes the preparation: high-dose vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D if there is a deficiency. In the 48 hours before the procedure we adjust the dosages to maximise healing potential without interfering with the anaesthetic.

Phase 3 · Recovery and regeneration (D+7 to M+3)

From the first post-operative week, one or two IV infusions at the Centre Trémoille speed up the resolution of oedema and bruising. The protocol then continues with oral supplementation for 2 to 3 months, accompanying the full maturation of the scars.

Reducing post-operative oedema

The anti-inflammatory properties of magnesium and the B vitamins may help to limit eyelid swelling in the first days after eye surgery. Vitamin C, by strengthening capillary walls, contributes to limiting fluid leaking into the tissues.

Reducing bruising

Vitamin C and vitamin K take part in strengthening vessel walls and in coagulation mechanisms. An optimised intake may help to reduce the intensity and the duration of peri-orbital bruising, a decisive aesthetic criterion for our patients.

Improving scar quality

Collagen of better structural quality, favoured by an adequate intake of vitamin C and zinc, may translate into finer, more discreet scars. In eyelid surgery, where the scar hides in the natural fold, this quality makes all the difference.

Faster recovery of energy

Surgical stress puts the whole body under strain. The B vitamins and magnesium contribute to cellular energy metabolism, helping patients to regain their vitality more quickly.

Vitamin therapy beyond surgery

Dr Cécile Carlier’s protocols cover a wide range of indications:

  • Chronic fatigue and overwork · Energising infusions based on B vitamins, magnesium and vitamin C to restore vitality
  • Radiance and skin quality · Antioxidant glutathione cocktails for a luminous complexion and reduced pigment spots
  • Immune support · Seasonal protocols based on high-dose vitamin C, zinc and vitamin D
  • Hair loss · Targeted supplementation with biotin (B8), zinc and iron
  • Sports preparation and recovery · Mineral and antioxidant replenishment
  • Nutritional assessment · The blood test results are analysed to identify the deficiencies to be corrected. A personalised supplementation protocol is drawn up.
  • Pre-operative infusion · Where indicated, an IV vitamin infusion is carried out at the Centre Trémoille, at the same address as our practice (20 rue de la Trémoille, Paris 8).
  • Surgical procedure · Blepharoplasty or CO₂ laser treatment, carried out in optimal conditions thanks to the nutritional preparation.
  • Post-operative infusions · One or two IV sessions at the Centre Trémoille in the weeks following the procedure speed up recovery.

Frequently asked questions about vitamin therapy

No. Vitamin therapy is a complement to the surgical protocol, not a substitute. It replaces neither the medical consultation, nor the pre-operative assessment, nor standard post-operative follow-up. Its role is to optimise the conditions for healing.

When should supplementation start before a blepharoplasty?

Ideally it should begin 2 to 3 weeks before the procedure. The blood test prescribed at the consultation identifies the priority deficiencies and allows the protocol to be adapted.

Are IV infusions painful?

Inserting the venous catheter causes a slight prick comparable to a blood test. Most patients describe it as a moment of relaxation.

How many sessions are recommended after eye surgery?

In general, 1 to 2 post-operative infusions two weeks apart, followed by oral supplementation for 2 to 3 months. The exact protocol is personalised according to your assessment and the type of procedure.

Can I have vitamin therapy without surgery?

Absolutely. The IV vitamin therapy at the Centre Trémoille is available independently of any surgery, for indications such as chronic fatigue, complexion radiance or immune support.

Is vitamin therapy covered by health insurance?

Protocols, dosages and fees are never published here: they are determined at the consultation, after examination, and provided in writing in the quotation.
