Hyaluronic acid Nasolabial folds
Naturally produced by our bodies, hyaluronic acid maintains the tone and elasticity of the skin and contributes to its youthful appearance. In aesthetic medicine, it is used to counter the signs of facial ageing, and the nasolabial folds in particular.
What are nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds are the folds running from the root of the nose to the corners of the lips. They form with age, under the combined effect of facial expressions and skin ageing. In some people they are very pronounced and give the face a tired, sad and austere appearance.
How do nasolabial folds form?
The formation of nasolabial folds is a perfectly normal effect of skin ageing, accentuated by the expressions we make regularly, from laughing and smiling to other movements of the face. They are more pronounced in some people, mainly for reasons of genetic inheritance and other intrinsic factors such as the shape of the face. All the lifestyle factors that influence skin ageing can also deepen them: smoking, stress, excessive sun exposure and so on.

Before your session, Dr Hayot will see you at his practice for a preliminary consultation, which allows him to examine your face in preparation for the treatment. He always considers the face as a whole, in order to achieve a harmonious result. The degree of fat loss in the malar region must also be assessed in advance, to prepare for the injection. The session takes place in the doctor’s office and requires no special preparation. After cleansing your skin and marking the area to be treated, the doctor carries out the injections, following the strategy appropriate to your case:
- Where the furrows are only slightly marked, a superficial injection is enough, using a product such as Volbella.
- For deeper furrows, a dense hyaluronic acid such as Volift® is used to compensate for the loss of malar volume, before being injected into the furrows themselves.
Are there contraindications to hyaluronic acid injections in the nasolabial folds?
Hyaluronic acid injections to fill the nasolabial folds are contraindicated in the following cases:
- Known allergy to the product or to one of its components
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Autoimmune disease
- Anticoagulant or anti-inflammatory medication, which must be discontinued before the injections
Results of hyaluronic acid on nasolabial folds
Hyaluronic acid gives excellent results in filling nasolabial folds. By the end of the session they are visibly reduced, and the face looks younger and more relaxed. It generally takes a fortnight to see the optimal result, which then remains stable for 8 to 18 months. After that, further injections may be required.
