Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally present in our bodies, where it maintains the hydration and tone of the skin. In aesthetic medicine, it can be used to plump lips that are too thin, or to correct an asymmetry of the lips.
Why inject hyaluronic acid to increase lip volume?
Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid can meet a number of needs: lips that are too thin, an asymmetry between the upper and lower lip, or poorly defined lip contours. Some people are also self-conscious about the wrinkled appearance of the upper lip, a fairly common consequence of facial ageing. Hyaluronic acid corrects these minor flaws effectively while preserving the natural harmony of your face. Dr Hayot takes care not to over-correct, so as to plump the lips without excessive swelling.
What precautions should be taken before a hyaluronic acid injection in the lips?
A few precautions need to be taken before your injection session. They help avoid possible side effects. Patients should:
- Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays in the 24 hours before the session.
- Stop taking anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant drugs 72 hours before the session.
- Stop drinking alcohol about 12 hours before the procedure.
- Postpone the appointment in the event of an inflammatory skin reaction such as herpes or eczema.
How does a hyaluronic acid injection in the lips with Dr Hayot work?
A preliminary consultation is always arranged before the procedure. At that appointment, Dr Hayot makes sure the patient’s request is reasonable, so as to avoid over-correcting the lips, and rules out any contraindication. The procedure takes place in the doctor’s office, without anaesthetic, as it is virtually painless. To plump the lips, Dr Hayot uses a highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid injected with a very fine needle. Depending on the indication, the procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes. At the end of the session you can resume your usual activities, with no need to avoid social contact. In some cases, slight swelling of the lips may occur, and the doctor will then prescribe a dose of corticosteroids to be taken the day after the procedure.
What are the results of a hyaluronic acid injection in the lips?
The results are visible immediately after the session, although it is generally necessary to wait 15 days to see the optimal result. The lips are plumped and rejuvenated without excessive swelling, and defects of contour and symmetry are corrected. Once plumped, the lips also look brighter, thanks to the moisturising effect of the product. In the rare event of a defect or of discomfort, Dr Hayot can carry out a touch-up. Hyaluronic acid is a resorbable product, so the result is not permanent. It does, however, remain stable for 6 to 12 months after the procedure.
