The eye contour is the whole of the tissue surrounding the eye, a particularly delicate area where the skin is five times thinner than on the rest of the face. It includes the upper and lower eyelids, the inner corner of the eye and the surrounding skin.
Over time, the eye contour is exposed to many aggressors: natural ageing, lack of sleep, stress, repeated sun exposure and cellular oxidation. These factors contribute to the appearance of under-eye dark circles, wrinkles around the eyes and under-eye bags, three very common concerns in consultation.
Treating under-eye dark circles is often the first thing patients ask for.
They may be vascular (a bluish or purplish tone linked to the transparency of the vessels), pigmented (a brown tone linked to hypermelanosis) or structural (a hollow created by loss of volume). Wrinkles around the eyes generally appear from the thirties as expression lines, then deepen as the skin loses elasticity. The medical solution for under-eye bags depends on their origin: fluid retention or a fatty hernia.
Principles
Management of the eye contour rests on a personalised analysis of each patient. The oculoplastic surgeon assesses the nature of the problem, the condition of the skin and the patient’s expectations before proposing a suitable treatment.
Hyaluronic acid injection around the eyes is a very widespread option for treating hollow dark circles and deep wrinkles. This biocompatible product restores lost volume and hydrates the skin deep down. Results are visible from the first session and generally last between 12 and 18 months, depending on the individual.
Other complementary approaches exist: topical treatments based on retinol or peptides, gentle chemical peels and pulsed light therapies.

Pigmented dark circles correspond to hyperpigmentation of the skin. Static wrinkles, by contrast, are visible at rest and reflect a loss of skin elasticity. Both types can be softened with botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid injections, depending on their nature and their depth.
Under-eye bags particularly concern patients who notice repeated swelling in the lower eyelid area.
These bags may be due to a build-up of fat or to water retention. Depending on the diagnosis, the oculoplastic surgeon may propose either a draining injection or skin tightening.
Ideal candidates are patients in good general health, with no active eye disease. It is preferable to have no skin infection in the area to be treated. Pregnant or breastfeeding women must postpone any treatment.

Technique and Procedure
Before
Your oculoplastic surgeon begins with an initial consultation devoted to the eye contour, examining the quality of your skin, the severity of the under-eye bags and the condition of the wrinkles around the eyes. Photographs are taken and your expectations are discussed. A personalised treatment plan is drawn up, defining the areas to treat and the amount of product required. It is advisable to avoid anticoagulants and aspirin in the days before the session, to reduce the risk of bruising. The consultation usually lasts between 20 and 30 minutes.
During
On the day of the procedure, the oculoplastic surgeon carefully cleanses the eye contour. An anaesthetic cream may be applied to make you as comfortable as possible during the injections. The product chosen is a hyaluronic acid specifically adapted to the periocular area, more fluid and less dense than the one used for the lips or the cheekbones.
The injections are performed with great precision, most often with a fine cannula to avoid trauma. Treating under-eye bags and wrinkles around the eyes usually requires 1 to 2 millilitres of product in total. The session lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes. You will simply feel a slight pinching or a sensation of pressure, which is entirely tolerable.
After
Immediately after the injections you can resume your daily activities. Mild swelling or temporary redness may appear around the eye contour, but generally disappears within 24 to 48 hours. It is advisable to avoid intense physical effort and exposure to extreme heat during the first 24 hours.
Results are visible immediately after injection, although the final result is fully appreciated after about a week, once the product has settled. The effects last on average 12 to 18 months, depending on your metabolism and your skin type. A review is scheduled approximately 2 weeks after treatment to assess the result and carry out any necessary touch-ups. Results and Post-Operative Care
Expected Results
The results of an eye contour treatment are usually visible within the first few days after the procedure, although the final result stabilises over two to three weeks.
Patients notice a marked improvement in the appearance of under-eye bags, with a clear reduction in volume and a natural lifting effect. For wrinkles around the eyes, results appear progressively as the product stimulates collagen production.
How long results last varies between individuals and with the type of product used. On average, the effects of hyaluronic acid injections around the eyes last between twelve and eighteen months. Regular maintenance sessions help to preserve the harmony of the gaze over time.
Risks
The risks associated with injections around the eyes are generally minor and temporary.
The most common side effects are slight redness, mild swelling or bruising, which disappear within five to seven days. These reactions are entirely normal and part of the healing process.
In rare cases, more serious complications may occur, such as visible irregularities or asymmetry.
These situations remain uncommon and can generally be corrected at the follow-up consultation. Your oculoplastic surgeon will make any corrections needed to achieve a harmonious result.
The post-operative course is straightforward. It is advisable to avoid intense physical effort and exposure to heat during the first twenty-four hours.
