WHICH PLASTIC SURGERY IS RIGHT FOR MY EYELIDS?

There are different types of blepharoplasty. Your surgeon will advise you on the treatment best suited to your eyelids after your initial consultation.

Upper Blepharoplasty

You start to think about it when you find it harder and harder to apply makeup. to apply make-upexcess skin begins to hide the crease crease. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty involves resection of excess skin, using a CO2 laser scalpel.

Lower Blepharoplasty

It involves eitherremoving fat pockets by transconjunctival blepharoplasty using the Co2 laserlaser, or treating excess skin with a pinch blepharoplasty. If there is a muscular festoon or the beginnings of a malar pocket, it is preferable to perform a sub-muscular lift of the lower eyelids. It is also important to treat hollow circles with microlipofilling or colored circles with nanolipofilling.

Addition blepharoplasty

The face ages and loses volume: this can be effectively treated with hyaluronic acid or fat injections throughout the face.In the eyelids and eye area, this same loss of volume begins as early as age 30. This is the area of the face where the skin is thinnest and mimicry is most important, and this is also where volume loss first occurs. The addition blepharoplasty involves combining skin resection of the lower or upper eyelids with fat injection using microlipostructure fat injection (either in the upper eyelid, in the hollow ring, in the tear valley or in the malar region).

WHEN SHOULD BLEPHAROPLASTY BE PERFORMED?

The indications for blepharoplasty have expanded considerably since techniques have become increasingly precise. Today, it is possible to perform custom surgery.

Aesthetic indications

From the age of age 30the appearance of small bags and dark circles can lead to tired-looking eyes. dark circles which is beginning to deepen. In this case, the pocket can be retracted and the ring injected to the nearest millimetre. microlipofilling.Around the age of 40-45, the upper third of the face must be taken care of as a whole, to ensure a harmonious harmonious lookThe upper eyelid droops, bags settle under the eyes and dark circles become more pronounced. It’s time to treat the skin of the upper and lower eyelids as well as the periorbital area (i.e. the temple and malar area).Around age 50-55It is essential that the eyes are in harmony with the rest of the face. A blepharoplasty must be combined with fat injections in the lower face, i.e. in the nasolabial folds, cheek wrinkles, jawline and missing volumes in the lower part of the face.

Medical pathologies

While the procedure is generally requested for aesthetic reasons, these situations do not represent the majority of cases. This is why the first consultation with Dr. Hayot is important to understand the treatment options available and to agree whether blepharoplasty is suitable for the patient’s pathology:
  • Chalazion: This is a cyst forming on the eyelid due to a blocked Meibomius gland, causing a small bump that is sometimes tender and red.
  • Ectropion: This pathology involves eversion of the lower eyelid, leaving the inside of the eyelid exposed and causing irritation.
  • Entropion: This is the opposite of ectropion, where the eyelid turns inwards, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye and causing irritation.
  • Drooping eyelid: Also known as ptosis, this condition is characterized by the drooping of the upper eyelid, which can impede vision.
  • Under-eye bags: This corresponds to swelling or excess skin and fat under the eyes, often giving a tired appearance.

PROCEDURE FOR EYELID SURGERY WITH DR HAYOT

  1. First consultation
Patients undergo an initial consultation with the doctor for a clinical examination of the eyelids and face. Dr. Hayot has been practicing blepharoplasty for over 30 years. His experience enables him to advise you on the procedures best suited to your needs, and to draw up a tailor-made treatment plan. Certain contraindications are possible, notably for individuals with certain eye conditions such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy, and those with serious uncontrolled health problems. In these cases, Dr. Hayot recommends avoiding plastic surgery.
  1. Pre-operation advice
The aim of this advice is to minimize risks and prepare patients both physically and mentally. Clarity of information and open communication with Dr. Hayot are key to approaching the procedure with confidence and in the best possible conditions. It is advisable to stop smoking and drinking alcohol several weeks before the operation, as this can affect healing. It is also advisable to limit the use of medications and supplements that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
  1. The operation
Cosmetic surgery is absolutely painless. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and, in some cases, general anaesthetic. There is no pain either during the procedure or in the post-operative period. The only micro-pain that may occur is when lipostructure is performed in the fat harvesting area, as there may be slight sensitivity. Blepharoplasty can have certain side effects. Common side effects include bruising and swelling around the eyes, mild eye irritation, temporary sensitivity to light or excessive tearing. Possible risks, although rare, can include infections, adverse reactions to anesthesia, visible scarring, or in extremely rare cases, vision loss due to intraoperative complications. That’s why it’s crucial to choose an experienced surgeon like Dr. Hayot before deciding to proceed with blepharoplasty, to fully understand the risks and ensure that the operation is carried out under the safest possible conditions.
  1. Post-op advice
No sports can be practised for 15 days to 3 weeks following surgery. It takes around ten days to resume normal social activities, except in the case of transconjunctival laser removal of the under-eye bags, when social activities can be resumed on the 4th-5th day after the operation. Complications can be manifold, but when you’re used to them and your surgeon is accustomed to performing blepharoplasties, the risks are minimal.

CAN BLEPHAROPLASTY BE PERFORMED SEVERAL TIMES?

Blepharoplasty is a “one-shot surgery”, and should never be repeated! When bags under the eyes are removed transconjunctivally, the result is permanent, and the bags never reappear. Only with lipostructure, as we continue to age, do we lose our own fat as well as the fat that has been transferred, and after ten years or so, we have to redo the lipostructure. That’s why blepharoplasty has to be done right the first time, because it’s tricky to make up for a botched, unnatural surgery that has altered the look of the eyes. My vision of aesthetic rejuvenation surgery has evolved to incorporate the most effective and natural surgical methods. In 2015, at the Centrofacial Rejuvenation congress in Belgium, I witnessed the incredible results of addition blepharoplasty, the principle of which is to rejuvenate the eyes by adding volume to the upper eyelids rather than removing skin and fat. Today, I almost systematically combine volume restoration by micro-lipofilling with conventional skin or fat resection. The injections are performed using my patient’s own fat. Here are a few examples:

Addition blepharoplasty

One patient presented with very large bags and a heavy upper eyelid. We performed an addition blepharoplasty and then sculpted the eyes using the patient’s own fat. We completed the procedure by performing nanofat, i.e. regenerative medicine, on the rest of the face to treat the skin quality.

Addition blepharoplasty

A patient came to me for eye rejuvenation. I performed an addition blepharoplasty combined with aesthetic medicine using her own fat. The oval of the face was treated with jawline contouring techniques, using her own body fat. All facial wrinkles were also treated with the same principle, and nano lipofilling was performed to improve the quality of the fat. This technique is known as fat lifting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT EYELID SURGERY

What is the ideal age for blepharoplasty?

In general, blepharoplasty is often performed on patients aged 35 and over, when the first signs of sagging skin and excess fat around the eyelids become visible. Lifestyle habits and genetics can influence the ideal time to consider blepharoplasty.

What’s the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty is designed to correct excess skin and heavy eyelids in the upper eye area. Inferior blepharoplasty is indicated to straighten sagging skin and reduce dark circles under the eyes. The two techniques can be performed independently or in combination, depending on the patient’s needs.

How do you know if you need eyelid surgery?

If you experience visual discomfort due to heavy or drooping eyelids, or if you’re unhappy with the aesthetic appearance of your eyelids, a consultation with Dr. Hayot can help determine whether eyelid surgery is right for you.

What type of anesthesia is used for blepharoplasty?

Most of Dr. Hayot’s blepharoplasty procedures are performed under local anesthetic. Rarely, they are covered by a general anesthetic.

How do I prepare for blepharoplasty?

A pre-operative consultation is essential before undergoing blepharoplasty. This is the time to discuss your expectations and medical history, and to ask questions in order to understand the details of the procedure. Dr. Hayot will ask you to complete a full medical check-up, including blood tests and complementary examinations. Smoking and alcohol cessation is required a few days before the operation.

Can eyelid surgery be combined with another operation?

Eyelid surgery can be combined with other aesthetic surgical procedures, such as a facelift, rhinoplasty, Botox or hyaluronic acid injections, as part of a comprehensive facial treatment.

Is blepharoplasty painful?

Prior to blepharoplasty, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area around the eyes and reduce the pain of the procedure. After the operation, it is common to feel a sensation of tightness around the eyelids.

What are the scars after blepharoplasty?

After blepharoplasty, Dr. Hayot hides the scars in the natural folds of the eyelids; on the upper eyelid, in the crease, and just under the eyelashes or on the inside of the lower eyelid, making the scars barely visible once healed.

How long after blepharoplasty will the eyelids have their final appearance?

The final appearance of the eyelids after blepharoplasty can be observed after a few months, generally between 3 and 6 months, while the swelling diminishes completely and the scars mature.

Is it possible to have a second blepharoplasty after a few years?

A consultation with Dr. Hayot will be necessary to check whether a second blepharoplasty can be performed after a few years, particularly if the effects of aging reappear or if the patient wishes to further improve the appearance of the eyelids.

How to make up for a botched blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a “one-shot surgery”, never to be repeated. To make up for a failed blepharoplasty, it’s advisable to consult an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Hayot, who can assess the specific problems and propose a surgical solution, often a blepharoplasty revision, to improve the appearance and function of the eyelids.

Is blepharoplasty covered?

Coverage for blepharoplasty depends on the reason for the procedure: if it is carried out for medical reasons, such as to improve peripheral vision, it may be partially or fully covered by insurance. Alternatively, if it is performed for purely aesthetic reasons, the cost is generally borne by the patient. Dr. Hayot will provide you with more information during your initial consultation.
